The Old Bell Tavern

6 Royal Parade, Harrogate, North Yorkshire

During the 18th century, many people travelled to Harrogate to take the cure from the country's strongest sulphur waters. This inn was frequented by some of those travellers. However, one of them outstayed his welcome here and refused all blandishment to leave. There was a violent struggle and the traveller expired. The proprietor was charged with murder. However, the only witness, a woman, was discredited because she was pregnant. This was a legitimate argument at the time since a judge would have ruled she was not in her right mind. That traveller never did leave the Old Bell, frequently appearing as a ghost and looking very miserable.
